The Nursery Curriculum

The "Early Years Foundation Stage" (EYFS), covers learning, development and care from birth to the end of the academic year in which a child has their fifth birthday. Our curriculum is based on the EYFS, focusing on the needs, interests, and stages of development in order to help plan challenging and enjoyable experiences across all areas of Learning and Development. It is about developing key learning skills such as listening, speaking, concentration, persistence, learning to work together and cooperating with other children. It is also about developing early communication, literacy and numeracy skills that will prepare young children for Key Stage 1 of the National Curriculum. All providers of childcare for pre-school aged children should be working within the EYFS guidelines.

The EYFS covers six areas of learning and development:

Personal, Social and Emotional development
Communication, Language and Literacy
Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy (Mathematical Development)
Knowledge and understanding of the world
Physical Development
Creative Development

Each learning area has early learning goals which set out the skills, understanding, knowledge and attitudes which it is hoped children will reach or exceed by the end of the academic year in which they reach the age of five. These goals are equally important, cannot be delivered in isolation from the others, and must be delivered through planned, purposeful play, with a balance of adult led and child initiated activities. At some primary schools children are identified as Gifted and Talented and put on the G and T register. At Flagg Nursery School we acknowledge that children will have special interests, talents and may even be gifted. Annually we celebrate these interests through display. Termly we offer parent consultations which include time for you to share your child's special interests or talents as well as progress at school. Foundation or basic skills are very important to us and in 2009 our hard work was recognised nationally with the 'Basic Skills Agency Quality Mark' Award.

Recording and Reporting Progress

Your child's progress will be monitored throughout their time in the nursery. Each term (autumn, spring, summer) there is an opportunity to discuss progress through parent consultation sessions. Staff will share the children's records of achievement, photo assessments and examples of work with you and a copy of the final record will be passed on to your child's primary school. However, staff will always make time and be available to discuss your child and any concerns you may have.
